What is Third Box?
Third Box is a safe place, apart from expectations, politics and pressure, where a woman in an unintended pregnancy can be unsure of what to do.
Why is Third Box needed?
2.7 million American women experience an unintended pregnancy each year. 75% of them know what they will do. The current landscape offers organizations which assist women to terminate their pregnancies, and organizations which assist women to continue their pregnancies. But one in four women in America who is experiencing an unintended pregnancy is unsure of what to do. That’s over 650,000 women each year. Who is serving the unsure woman? Her needs are very specific and very different from the woman who knows what she will do.
Third Box exists to serve the unsure woman. We are the only organization in the United States who commissioned national research to find out her unique needs. Based on the research, we developed an organization that solely exists to meet her medical and emotional needs. We respect and honor women as decision-makers. Our role is to help each woman unearth her personal values and beliefs so they can be part of her decision making process. After her decision, and no matter what choice she makes, we offer ongoing emotional support for up to one year through our team of professional counselors made up of licensed clinicians and master's degreed interns. All of our services are free.
Our challenge to society.
Americans disagree about many things. But the Golden Rule, or the Ethic of Reciprocity, is found in nearly every ethical and faith tradition. It’s something we can all agree on. What would happen if we applied the Golden Rule to today’s most polarized social issues, like abortion?
Third Box is deeply committed to loving our neighbors as ourselves. We offer each unsure woman the time, space and support she needs to make her own decision, one based upon her beliefs and values. And we offer her emotional support for the coming year, no matter what choice she makes. Our personalized process of same day medical appointments and extended counseling enables her to work through her most pressing needs. This is what we would want ourselves, and it’s exactly what she deserves. We’re asking America to think beyond the two-box political system when it comes to abortion. Our society can and should be delighted to meet the unsure woman's most pressing needs.
